Batteries

As prices of handsets fall, corners have to be cut in all areas and unfortunately batteries that come with handsets are not excluded. If you treat your battery with care, it will last a while but having a good second battery that can be rotated with another battery is the way to get the most life from your equipment. Also, every two to three weeks, let your battery drain fully and charge it again on a desktop charger. The best item is a battery conditioner but a decision has to be made if it is less expensive to purchase batteries or a
conditioner. This is also an item where great care has to be taken when purchasing aftermarket items. A poor aftermarket battery will result in equipment not working properly or even breaking based on a bad battery. |
Car Kits

Car Kits provide many benefits to a wireless user. First and foremost you have to decide if you want a car kit that is permanently mounted in a vehicle of a 'soft install' car kit that can be taken from one vehicle to another. Hard install car kits provide the best audio quality because they have the best external speaker and the best reception as you are using an external antenna. Something as small as metallic tint on a window can hamper a signal so having an external antenna is a good choice. Your unit will also have a place to be put every time you get in your vehicle. Both soft install kits and hard install kits will charge your units while they are plugged in. |
Carry Cases

Carry cases are another important accessory, not just to be able to carry your radios but also to give the units protection. Many carry cases come with clear plastic front covers that will give the units added protection from rain, dusty environments etc. One other area where a carry case will give a unit added protection is if we should drop it. We have all dropped radios and seen batteries go flying or housings cracking so a case is an important accessory to minimize damage. |
Data Products

Data Cables are for linking your unit to another external piece of equipment. Computers, PDA's are typical devices where integration of a wireless product has evolved and in some cases, is now necessary. If you have wireless internet, you might want to connect your wireless device to a PDA or computer to give you full internet access. If you have a new type of unit that supports the new J2ME mobile java application software you can purchase the cables that you will need to be able to download new programs or applications directly into your handset. |
Desktop Chargers

Most units come with a plug in charger so you are able to charge it at your house. Desktop chargers are a convenient way to rapidly charge your battery if it needs charging. There are different types of desktop chargers ranging from the chargers that just plug into the unit to a drop in type charger where you drop your radio into a base. Make sure, with any desktop chargers that you turn the unit off when you are charging it. |
Vehicular Chargers

Vehicular chargers are probably the most popular type of accessory. Vehicular chargers give you a way to charge your unit while you are in your vehicle. They are low cost and can save you during times when your battery runs down. Care must be taken when purchasing vehicular chargers as damage can be caused to the unit if a charger does not function properly and anytime that you are using the vehicles battery to supply power to a delicate wireless unit, you must make sure that it is manufactured in accordance with the units specifications. |
